Smart Devices Every Dorm Room Needs
Amazon Echo Dot
If there is only 1 smart device, you get for your dorm room or off-campus apartment it should be the Echo Dot. At under $40 this smart speaker, featuring everyone’s favorite virtual assistant Alexa, can handle everything you need. You can use it with or without an Amazon Prime account and the set-up is so simple you’ll have it working in minutes.
You can use Alexa to stream music, set alarms, order items on Amazon (like a much-needed text book), look up answers to tough geometry questions, or get Domino’s pizza during a late-night study session. The Dot can also be used to control other smart gadgets, some of which are on our list.
The beauty of the Dot is that you can organize what you need to get done and have fun with it all at the same time. You can set reminders for an upcoming test, find out the weather if you live off-campus and need to travel or just de-stress with some silly jokes. Yes, Alexa does it all and with her help so will you.
LIFX Smart Lightbulbs
Want to turn down the lights when you’re already in bed? Need to set the mood for a party? Want to study without bothering your roommate? You can easily do all that with LIFX smart bulbs. They come in over 1,000 colors, including white and don’t need a separate bridge to operate like the Philips Hue line. Just screw them in and download the app so you can dim, brighten, or turn them on and off using your phone or Echo Dot.
With LIFX you can study late at night in your room without keeping your roomie up or dim the lights with a simple voice command to watch a movie. It’s the ultimate in convenience and luxury, but they do come at a price; $60 a bulb to be exact. A bit expensive but you do get a discount when you buy more than one.
iRobot Roomba 690
Nobody likes to vacuum, trust me I know. I also know you’ll never mind again once you get an iRobot Roomba 690. You can connect it using the app to, you guessed it, Alexa, as well as your smartphone and schedule it to clean your room when your away, in class, or playing video games.
It has a charging station that it leaves from and returns to when done and can work on virtually any type of floor, from carpets to hardwoods and tiling. It is a bit on the pricey side at around $300 but it’s worth it to never have to pick up a broom again!
WeMo Switch Smart Plug
Turn ordinary lights or even your TV into a smart gadget using the WeMo smart plug. Just plug it into any existing outlet, then plug your lamp, coffeepot, hot iron, fan, TV, or any other device into it and you are ready to go. Using the app, or, you guessed it, Alexa, you can turn the fan off with a simple voice command or schedule your coffee pot to turn on at 6 a.m. so you wake up and get to class all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
The WeMo Switch Smart Plug is under $35, so you can place one in every outlet of your dorm room or apartment. It’s an easy and affordable way to get connected.
College life can get hectic, making it easy to lose or misplace things like your keys or smartphone. Hey, I’m out of college and I still lose my things. Which is why I love the Tile, and so will you. This small square device with a hidden button resembles a keychain and is Bluetooth connected; put it on your wallet, phone, or yes, keys, to locate them when they go missing. This is also an added layer of protection for dorm life, where you often need to keep valuables safe.
Using your smartphone, you can activate the Tile to find things nearby and it will play a tune until you find what’s missing. So, if your keys are hidden under a pile of clothes you’ll locate them in seconds. You can also use the Tile community to find things that may be far away, like if you left your phone in the movie theater. Speaking of phones, if you press the hidden button it will make your phone ring, even when it’s on silent.
The Tile Mate s affordable at $25, but they do need to be replaced every few months; that’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.
Last, but not least is the GunBox. Yes, it was designed as a safety case for guns, but it also can be used to keep your valuables, documents, and more safe and secure. Compatible with Alexa (of course) you can keep your things safe and secure and there are several options, including a finger print scanner, motion detector, and interior LED light.
It’s also reasonably priced at $150.
And there you have it, our list of smart devices every dorm room needs. These gadgets will help you navigate the college world in ways you never imagined.
