Often, people get carried away decorating and redecorating the interior of their homes that they forget about the outside! The exterior of a house is arguably the most important feature; as the first thing people see, the outside of your property should reflect you (or at least, what you want people to think!)
You may not realise it, but there’s a lot that can be altered on the exterior; these 10 tips just happen to be our top ones!
10 Ways to Spruce Up the Outside of Your Home:
Review the Front Door
One of the easiest (and quickest) ways to spruce up the outside of your home is to upgrade and replace the front door. The front door of a home is the microcosm of your house’s exterior; it’s the place everyone that enters will need to stand and stare at…
You can either replace the door, or simply take it off its hinges, sand it down and give it a new lick of paint!
Update your Driveway
This can be quite a costly venture but the return on investment is far higher than the rest, as the benefits will be visible for years to come afterwards.
If you’re not planning on updating our driveway you should at least give it a deep clean. Keeping it clear will not only make it easier to use but it’ll make your property appear larger and wider.
Add Spotlights and Outdoor Lighting
This is a very simple update that shouldn’t take longer than an hour or two on a Sunday afternoon. Adding spot (and any form of) lights to your front or rear will immediately update the look of your exterior. It’s an easy way to quickly add a little opulence to your home.
You can pick up solar powered outdoor spotlights from most garden and DIY stores fairly cheap; they should have a stake style to be easily pushed into moist earth for easy placing too.
Wrap Your Windows
A sense of sophistication is created by equal parts elegance and mystery. So, if you want your home to emanate a sophisticated quality you need to find a way to make it elegant and mysterious; simple, right?
Actually, yes. One way of doing this is by limiting the view into your home by outsiders and passers-by. You can either add shutters to the outside of blinds to the inside. Ensure you pick a beautiful material that matches your newly painted front door and you’re good to go!
Bring Out the Green
If you’re lucky enough to be host to greenery around your home make sure to look after it! Nothing says lazy like bald or yellowing grass.
The upkeep of most patches of lawn is very minimal, only requiring a water once a week (less in winter and more in summer). If your front garden needs a little more TLC you can either sprinkle grass seeds, plant turf in problem areas or hire a landscaper for a one-off repair.
The style of garden you choose should be dependent on your personality. While an opulent nature patch with lots of different flowers and shrubs will look wonderful, if you’re out or away a lot (or the forgetful type) then it won’t receive the required care to flourish. In this instance, less is definitely more.
Repair and Repaint the Decking
For a cheap and easy fix, simply repair any damage and imperfections on your decking and porch. Once it’s up to scratch seal the improvements in a few layers of hardwearing exterior paint.
Garden in a Container
If you’re working with a small space or mini garden then a lush lawn and flower bed probably isn’t an option. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t show your personality through a colourful arrangement.
A container garden simply means lots of containers – grab a bunch of different size plant pots from your nearest garden store and fill with an array of different flowers for a shabby chic style!
Consider the Accessories
Accessories may seem like minor details but when grouped together they become quite compelling. Clean your letterbox, replace old numbers and give your door knock a good shine too.
If you’re looking for the picturesque, cutesy family home then window boxes will be a must for you. They’re a simple addition that can add a huge amount of character.
If you’ve already got some potted plants on your porch, fill the window boxes with herbs instead; this way you’ll always have fresh herbs to hand and the porch area will smell wonderful!
Gutters and Pipes
Not the most attractive of features, but unfortunately, guttering is a necessity. A clean gutter pipe may go unnoticed but a dirty one will not. A simple wipe down and rinse will have your pipes looking as good as new in no time!
Improving the exterior of your home may seem like a cumbersome task; it is time consuming. However, it will increase your property’s curb appeal and thus its value. Plus – other than watering your greenery – most of these jobs will only require a yearly spruce!
